Microsoft kills PS5 version of Gears of War E-Day, finally announces October release date

Xbox has announced that Gears of War: E-Day will be releasing on October 6, 2026, and that it'll be an Xbox console exclusive.

Despite a Gears of War: E-Day Direct being the deep dive at the end of this month's Xbox Games Showcase, Microsoft's show opened up with gameplay from the upcoming prequel, showing Marcus, Dom, and some new faces as they traverse the streets of Kalona as the Locust begin to emerge.

It showed off some pretty standard Gears shooting, but this time around Marcus seems a bit more nimble as the squad now has the ability to slide (despite how bulky all that armor is). I'm sure we'll see a bit more of it in the Gears of War: E-Day Direct, but from what we've seen so far it's looking like some good old Gears.

The trailer ends with news that Gears of War: E-Day will also be plunging into that crowded September/October mosh pit, with an October 6, 2026 release date confirmed. And on top of that, it's confirmed that the game will be an Xbox console exclusive, with no PS5 release is on the way.

Given that the game was rated for Xbox, PS5, and PC earlier this week, it definitely feels like a PS5 version of the next Gears game was planned (especially with the remaster arriving on PS5 last year to welcome PlayStation players to the franchise). Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb said this was the case, but now the PS5 version is no longer happening as new Xbox CEO Asha Sharma makes changes to go – as she puts it – "back to Xbox."

Gears of War 6 was considered before The Coalition decided on E-Day, JD Fenix actor says as he pitches a bonkers sequel about Marcus fighting his zombie son.
