Breast cancer is one of the most dangerous types of diseases and approximately one of eight women develops invasive breast cancer. Breast cancer rates has declined significantly and is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in women (next to skin cancer) and kills more women than all cancers together expecting lung cancer, says BreastCancer.Org.
Early intervention is essential to increasing chances or survival so WebMD recommends that you check for this possible warning signs and check them during regular breast exam:
1. Lump in the breast or under the arm:
The lump is usually the first sign of breast cancer, and is easier to spot, according to Breast Cancer.Org. This lumps don’t hurt, feel hard and have uneven edges. Checking with your doctor for any unusual lumps is ok.
2. Unusual swelling under the arm
When you do a monthly exam, feel carefully under your arm for any areas that are unusually swollen.
3. Changes in the skin around the nipple
Look at your nipples and if you notice any change of colors, shapes, or textures in the skin around your nipple visit your doctor. Remember that changes in skin pigmentation are also common in skin cancers.
4. Unusual swelling of one breast
If you notice any unusual swelling then you should be examined by a doctor. Also, an unusual discharge from the nipple (that isn’t breast milk) is a sign to go to a doctor.
5. Gland Enlargement
Enlarged glands in the breast or around the underarms could indicate breast cancer or another type of infection and should be examined by your doctor.
Mayo Clinic, gives us three other symptoms to look for include:
6. Blood or other unusual discharge from nipple
7. A newly inverted nipple
8. Redness or skin changes near breast (similar to that of skin of orange)
The symptoms listed above can also indicate a cyst or other less serious conditions ,but only by a doctor examination, you will be able to confirm or discard the suspicions. Regularly examining your breasts is the best way to catch changes in your body as soon as they happen.
