Former GTA 6 artist also "can't wait" for Trailer 3, but warns the final game won't be exactly like what you see: "That view is getting madly polished"

We're all just casually waiting for the next GTA 6 trailer to arrive, as the release of Rockstar's blockbuster game gets closer and closer. A former artist on the project is just as excited as everyone, but they warn not to take everything in the footage on face value.

On an episode of the Kiwi Talkz podcast, David O'Reilly, an environmental artist who worked at Rockstar for a number of years, contributing to Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 5 and GTA 6, talked up the next big teaser. "I can't wait for the next trailer too, all that stuff I have no idea about, the characterization, seeing that city all fleshed out so much more than when I'd last wandered it," he says.

But he's keen for people to understand, video game trailers are really more about vibe than specifics, because it's all in flux until the thing ships. "When you make a trailer, they look at where the camera's going to be, and that view is getting madly polished," he explains.

"Whereas everything that's not in that view is not getting madly polished yet," he continues. "The whole world doesn't look like that. You focus on the areas of the trailer."

What he's saying is always worth keeping in mind. Games are extremely iterative, and for something the size of Grand Theft Auto 6, you need to be ready for things to differ from what you saw in any given trailer.

As for giving anything away, O'Reilly claims he knows nothing, because he was in the art department. "With GTA 6, people are like, 'What's the story?'," he says. "And I'm like, 'I've no idea, dude, I don't know.' Because I worked on it for five years, but I have no idea about the storyline, other than I knew it had two characters, and that was the extent of my knowledge."

So, we're back to waiting for that third trailer. Any day now, probably!

GTA 6 might not feature an entirely rebuilt Rage Engine after all, as one report says it's more of an expansion on what Rockstar used in Red Dead Redemption 2.
